Works in every desktop browser with nothing installed. Paste a post link, choose a resolution, and the MP4 saves to your downloads folder.

Desktop is the easiest place to do this. Every major browser downloads the file natively, storage is rarely a constraint, and Save link as gives you direct control over where it goes. Nothing needs installing, and this page explains why that matters more than it might seem.
Click the post on x.com so it opens on its own page. The URL in the address bar is now the link you need, which is the most reliable way to see exactly what you are copying.
Select the address bar and copy it, or use the share icon under the post and choose Copy link to post. Both give the same result.
Avoid right-clicking the video itself and choosing Copy video address. That returns a link to a streaming fragment rather than the post, and it expires within minutes.
Drop the link into the field above and press Get video. Every available resolution is listed within a second.
Click the download control, or right-click it and choose Save link as to pick the destination folder yourself.
The download is an ordinary file transfer, so every desktop browser handles it. The differences are in where the file lands and how the browser presents it.
Saves to your Downloads folder and shows the file in the downloads bar or bubble. Settings > Downloads has a "Ask where to save each file" toggle, which is worth enabling if you save often and want them sorted as you go.
Behaves identically to Chrome, sharing the same underlying engine. Downloads appear in a flyout from the toolbar. Edge occasionally shows an extra confirmation for larger files, which is a SmartScreen prompt rather than an error.
Saves to Downloads and shows a downloads arrow in the toolbar. Settings > General > Downloads has the equivalent "Always ask you where to save files" option.

All Chromium-based and behave like Chrome. Brave's shields occasionally interfere with cross-origin downloads; if a download does not start, lowering shields for this site is the first thing to try.
Extensions that add a download button directly to X are the obvious convenience, and the access they require is out of proportion to the task for most people. The comparison is worth making explicitly.

A web page sees exactly one thing: the link you chose to paste. It has no window into your browser beyond the tab it occupies, and that access ends when the tab closes.
An extension granted access to x.com can read every page you load there while you are signed in, which includes your timeline, your direct messages and your account settings. Many request access to all sites, which extends that to webmail and banking.
This is the part that turns a theoretical risk into a documented one.
Extensions update automatically. The version you install after reading the reviews is not necessarily the version running next month.
A recurring pattern in browser security: a genuinely useful extension builds a large user base over years, then is sold. The new owner ships an update adding tracking, ad injection or credential harvesting. It reaches every existing installation silently, carrying the permissions the original earned. Users see the same download button and notice nothing.
A web tool has no equivalent exposure. If it changes, you meet the change on your next visit, and it never held standing access to anything else.
The comparison should be fair. Extensions are better at bulk work, where saving dozens of items link by link is tedious, and they can reach content a public tool cannot, such as your own protected posts, because they run inside your session.
If you archive media professionally and download constantly, that convenience may be worth the exposure. For someone saving a clip occasionally, the calculation is different.
Right-clicking the download control and choosing Save link as opens a file dialog, letting you set both folder and filename before the transfer starts. When saving several videos into one project folder, this is considerably quicker than moving them afterwards.
Desktop is the right place for these. Storage is rarely the constraint it is on a phone, connections are usually faster and more stable, and a browser download that gets interrupted can be resumed from the downloads list.
If a long video repeatedly fails on mobile, downloading it here and transferring is the reliable route.
H.264 MP4 imports directly into Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and every other desktop editor without a transcode pass. Saving to your project's media folder with Save link as means the file is where the editor expects it before you import.
Copy the URL from the address bar, switch tabs, paste into the field, press Enter. The field is focusable by tab and the download control is a real link, so the whole process works without a mouse.

Testing in a private window is the fastest diagnosis, since most extensions are disabled there by default. If the download works in private browsing, an extension is responsible; pausing it for this site resolves it.
Corporate, school and some public networks block media downloads at the DNS or proxy level. A different connection confirms it quickly.
