Downloading on iPhone works, and the file almost always arrives. What catches people out is where it goes: Safari saves to the Files app, not to your camera roll. This page covers that, the storage and Low Power Mode behaviour that interrupts larger transfers, and what to do when a long video fails partway.
In the X app, tap the post so it opens on its own screen, then tap the share icon beneath the video and choose Copy link. If your share sheet shows Share via instead, pick that and then choose Copy from the system sheet.
Come back to this page in Safari and tap the Paste button inside the field. iOS may ask for permission to read the clipboard the first time; allowing it once is enough.
If you would rather not grant clipboard access, a long press in the field and then Paste works identically.
The highest quality is preselected. Step down one rung if you are on cellular data and want a smaller file, or if the video is long.
A blue download arrow appears beside the address bar. Tap it to confirm the transfer finished.
This is the single most common report on iOS, and nothing has gone wrong.
Safari writes every download to the Files app rather than the photo library. It does this because a download can be any file type: a PDF, a zip archive, a spreadsheet. Routing all of them through Photos would not make sense, so Apple routes none of them there automatically.
The video is on your device the moment the transfer completes. It is simply in a different place from where most people look first.
It now appears in Photos, in your camera roll, and behaves like anything shot on the device.
The video still plays perfectly well from the Files app, and can still be shared from there into messages, email or other apps. Moving it to Photos matters only if you want it in your camera roll for editing, AirDropping, or posting elsewhere.
Two causes. Either the file is still transferring, so wait for the download arrow to stop animating. Or Photos has been denied access: check Settings > Apps > Photos and confirm the permission.
Settings > Apps > Safari > Downloads lets you switch between On My iPhone and iCloud Drive.
Local storage is the better default. It is faster, it works with no connection, and it does not consume iCloud quota. iCloud Drive is useful if you routinely want the file on a Mac or iPad afterwards, but a large video will upload to iCloud immediately after downloading, which doubles the data used.
The same screen lets you set how long downloads are kept in the list. That setting removes the entry, not the file.
Most clips are a few megabytes and transfer without incident. Longer or higher-resolution videos are where mobile Safari occasionally struggles, and the failures have specific causes worth knowing.
iOS cancels a download when space runs low, and the notice is easy to miss. If a transfer stops partway with no obvious error, check Settings > General > iPhone Storage first.
iOS also reserves headroom for system operations, so a device reporting a small amount of free space may have effectively none available for a large download. If storage is tight, choosing a lower resolution is the quickest fix: a 360p copy of a two-minute video is roughly a tenth the size of the 1080p one.
With Low Power Mode on, iOS reduces background activity, and a download can stall when you switch away from Safari. Keep Safari in the foreground until the download arrow stops animating, or turn Low Power Mode off for the duration.
Moving between Wi-Fi and cellular, or between access points, interrupts an in-progress download. Safari does not always resume cleanly, and a partial file is the usual result. Staying on one network until the transfer completes avoids it.
For videos running several minutes at the highest resolution, the file can reach a few hundred megabytes. On a slow connection this takes long enough that any of the interruptions above becomes likely.
The practical approach is to step down one resolution rung. The transfer completes in a fraction of the time, and on a phone screen the visible difference is small. If you specifically need the highest quality of a long video, downloading on a desktop and transferring is more reliable. The desktop page covers that route.
Every browser on iOS uses Apple's WebKit engine underneath, so downloading behaves similarly, with differences in where the file is held first.
Chrome keeps downloads inside the app until you tap the share icon and choose Save to Files. That is one extra step compared to Safari.
Firefox behaves like Chrome, holding the file in its own downloads list before you export it.
Safari is the most direct route on this platform, which is why the steps above assume it.
The process is identical. iPadOS uses the same download manager and the same Files structure, and the Save Video step works the same way from the share sheet.
The one difference worth noting is storage: iPads often have more of it, so the large-file problems described above are less common.

App Store downloader apps generally wrap the same public data this site uses, then add advertising, tracking and in-app purchases. Several also request access to your photo library, which a browser does not need for this task.
If you want a home screen icon without any of that, this site can be added to your home screen from the Safari share menu. It then opens full screen with no address bar, keeps the written pages available offline, and takes roughly 100 KB. It asks for no permissions, because it needs none.
Some people use the Shortcuts app to automate saving. It works, and it is worth knowing what it does: a shortcut of this kind fetches the same public post data and writes the resulting file to Photos, skipping the manual Save Video step.
Two cautions. Shortcuts shared in forums often contain a hardcoded third-party API endpoint, so you are trusting whoever runs that service with every link you process. And shortcuts break whenever the underlying service changes, which happens regularly.
For occasional saving, the manual route is more predictable. For frequent saving, the installed web app removes most of the friction without introducing a third party.
These are platform limits rather than iOS ones, and no app or shortcut works around them.
